ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Jan. 18, 2020) – Despite a team-high ten points, nine rebounds and four assists from junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 61-48 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (6-12, 0-7 ECC) have dropped nine games in a row, while the Lions (13-5, 5-1 ECC) have won four of their last five games.
Brown also added a steal and sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had nine points and four rebounds. Senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had seven points and five rebounds and freshman Brianna Lee (Elmont, N.Y./Saint Mary's) had a career-high seven points with two blocks. Freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) added six points and five rebounds.
Molloy was led by Kadijah Dickson who had a game-high 31 points and 13 rebounds.
Mercy took an early 3-2 lead after a Collier three at the 8:52 mark. Molloy answered with four straight points to take a 6-3 lead before the Mavericks went on a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the game, 10-6, with 4:38 remaining in the first quarter. Mercy held a 13-11 lead after a Bender three with 2:15 on the clock, but the hosts ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 16-13 lead after one quarter.
The hosts opened the second quarter on a 17-0 run to increase the lead to 20, 33-13, with 3:30 remaining before halftime. A Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) layup at the 3:03 mark ended a 22-0 Molloy run that started in the first quarter and brought the Mavericks to within 18, 33-15. A Mackenzie Burke three with 44 seconds left in the half gave the Lions a 38-17 lead at halftime.
Molloy started the second half by increasing the lead to 24, 47-23, with 3:41 left in the third quarter. Mercy ensued with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 15, 47-32, with 1:52 remaining in the quarter. The Lions tallied three straight points to put the lead back to 19 and headed into the fourth quarter up, 54-35.
The Lions increased the lead back to 20, 56-36, with 7:39 left to play. Mercy did not give up and went on a 9-2 run, capped off by a Brown layup, which made it 58-45 with 2:16 on the clock. The Mavericks comeback bid ran out of time and Molloy held on for the win.
Mercy shot 27.6 percent (16-for-58) from the floor, 27.3 percent (6-for-22) from downtown and 50.0 percent (10-for-20) from the foul line. Molloy shot 37.9 percent (22-for-58) from the field, 16.7 percent (3-for-18) from beyond the arc and 63.6 percent (14-for-22) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 44-41 edge on the boards.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 25th when they host Bridgeport at 12 p.m.
