Game Preview: Men's Basketball Hosts No. 17/25 Bridgeport on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 23, 2020) – The Mercy College men's basketball team resumes action on Saturday, January 25th when they host No. 17/25 University of Bridgeport in an ECC tilt.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is 3-4 in their last seven games and is coming off an 85-61 loss at Molloy on Saturday. The Mavericks are looking to defeat Bridgeport for the first time since December 21, 2013. Mercy is fourth in the ECC in free throw attempts (341) and is fifth with 38.2 rebounds per game. The Mavericks are led by redshirt junior Bryan Griffin who leads the nation in rebounds per game (13.9) and defensive rebounds per game (10.13). The forward is also No. 4 nationally in total rebounds (209) and No. 6 in double-doubles (10). Griffin was named ECC Player and Defensive Player of the Week earlier this week and is fourth in the ECC in points per game (18.0) and leads the ECC in blocks per game (1.9). Junior Nakeem Hamilton is second on the team with 13.7 points per game and leads the team with 1.0 steals per game. Freshman Garrett Kirkland is third on the team with 7.0 points per game and is shooting 35.3 percent from downtown with 1.4 made three-pointers per game.

Scouting the Purple Knights

Bridgeport is off to their best start in program history and is coming off an 87-85 road win at No. 10 St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday. The Purple Knights have won 11 games in a row and lead the ECC in points per game (84.0) and steals per game (10.5). Bridgeport is also second in the ECC in three-pointers made (143) and are fifth in free throw percentage (71.9). The Purple Knights are paced by one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week senior Bakary Camara who averages a team-high 15.1 points per game. The forward is ten points shy of 1,000 for his career and leads the team in rebounds per game (6.9) and steals per game (2.5). Senior D'Vonne Trumbo is a one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and is second on the team with 13.9 points per game. The guard is averaging a team-high 2.0 threes per game and leads the team with 3.9 assists per game.
