DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 19, 2020) – Despite a team-high 22 points and 11 rebounds from senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 71-55 decision to ECC foe Molloy College in a Play4Kay Game on Wednesday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (7-18, 1-13 ECC) have lost six games in a row, while the Lions (17-8, 9-4 ECC) sweep the season series.
Collier went a perfect 12-for-12 from the foul line and freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) netted 14 points and three steals. Sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) both netted six points apiece.
Molloy was led by Kadijah Dickson who had a game-high 23 points.
Mercy jumped out to a 6-5 lead at the 7:41 mark following a Wall three. The Lions answered with an 8-0 run to take a 13-6 lead with 5:24 remaining in the first quarter. A Gabriella Aspuru three gave Molloy a 16-8 lead, but the Mavericks battled back and went on an 11-5 run to cut the deficit to two, 21-19. A Jenna Silletti jumper right before the end of the quarter gave Molloy a 23-19 lead after one quarter of play.
The Mavericks opened the second quarter on a 7-3 run, capped off by a Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) layup, to tie the score at 26-26. The game was later tied at 32-32 with 3:25 on the clock after a pair Brown free throws. Molloy closed the quarter and half on a 9-2 run to head into halftime with a 41-34 lead.
Molloy started the third quarter on a 10-4 run to build a 13-point lead, 51-38, with 3:16 remaining in the quarter. Two Bender free throws made it 51-40, but the visitors closed the quarter on a 10-4 run to head into the fourth quarter up, 61-44.
Mercy outscored Molloy 11-10 in the fourth quarter but the deficit proved too much to overcome.
Mercy shot 25.0 percent (12-for-48) from the floor, 41.7 percent (5-for-12) from downtown and 92.9 percent (26-for-28) from the foul line. Molloy shot 44.1 percent (26-for-59) from the field, 31.6 percent (6-for-19) from beyond the arc and 72.2 percent (13-for-18) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 40-34 edge on the boards.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 22nd when they host Queens for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
