Game Preview: Men's Basketball Hosts Queens for Senior Day on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2020) – The Mercy College men's basketball team resumes action on Saturday, February 22nd when they host Queens College for Senior Day at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy has dropped three games in a row and needs to win their final two games against Queens and Bridgeport and have New York Tech lose their last three games to earn a spot into the ECC Tournament. The Mavericks are coming off an 87-59 loss to Molloy on Wednesday and are looking to sweep the season series with Queens for the first time since 2015-16. Mercy is led by one-time ECC Player of the Week and three-time Defensive Player of the Week redshirt junior Bryan Griffin who leads the nation in rebounds per game (13.9), total rebounds (306) and defensive rebounds per game (10.32). He also ranks No. 3 nationally in double-doubles (15) and leads the team with 19.4 points per game. Griffin set a new single-season school record for rebounds against Molloy on Wednesday, surpassing the mark of 300 he set last year and now has 306 on the year. Junior Nakeem Hamilton averages 12.4 points per game and a team-high-tying 2.3 assists per game and freshman Garrett Kirkland is a one-time ECC Rookie of the Week and is averaging 8.1 points per game. Freshman Brandon Wilson is a one-time ECC Rookie of the Week and has scored in double figures each of the last four games. Senior Lamont Williams Jr. leads the team in assist-to-turnover ratio and averages 1.6 made threes per game.

Scouting the Knights

Queens enters Saturday's game on a two-game losing streak and sits a half game behind New York Tech for the sixth and final ECC Tournament spot. The Knights are coming off an 80-58 loss against St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday. Queens is led by one-time ECC Player of the Week Elijah Bovell who is averaging a team-high 19.0 points per game on a team-high 48.6 percent shooting. The junior averages 2.0 made threes per game and is second on the team with 5.3 rebounds per game. Senior Shomari Redd is second on the team with 9.8 points per game and leads the team with 3.5 assists per game. Junior Tyrese Crosdale is third on the team with 8.7 points per game and sophomore David Grady III puts up 8.3 points per game.

Mercy resumes action on Saturday, February 29th when they play at Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
