WILSON, N.C. (Feb. 28, 2020) – Despite five different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College softball team dropped 2-1 and 6-4 decisions to Barton College on Friday afternoon at Jeffries Field.
The Mavericks (3-3) see their three-game winning streak come to an end, while the Bulldogs (6-8) snap an eight-game losing streak.
Game 1: Barton 2, Mercy 1
Barton scored twice in the first inning on one hit to take a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
Sophomore Katelyn Shephard (Beaumont, Calif./Beaumont) settled in and did not allow a run for the remainder of the contest, allowing the Mavericks to stay in the game.
Mercy scored their lone run in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1. Sophomore Ylannah Bowman (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior Erica Handegard (Reno, Nev./Earl Wooster). After a foul out to the shortstop, senior Erika Byrne (San Diego, Calif./San Diego Mesa College) delivered an RBI single to left field to score Bowman. A flyout to right field ended the threat and inning.
The Mavericks threatened in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, putting a runner on second in each inning but were unable to find the equalizer.
Bowman went 2-for-3 and Byrne went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Junior Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) went 2-for-4 and sophomore Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High) batted 1-for-4. Handegard went 1-for-1 and Shephard went the distance with just two runs allowed and five strikeouts to take the loss.
Barton was led by Lindsey Massengill who went 3-for-3 with an RBI. AnnaKate Gilchrist pitched a complete game with one run allowed to pick up the win.
Game 2: Barton 6, Mercy 4
Mercy started the scoring in the top of the first with a run on three hits and two Barton errors to take a 1-0 lead. Crawford led off the game by reaching on an error by the pitcher and advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher. Mueller then singled and Crawford advanced to third before being caught in a rundown for the first out. Mueller advanced to second after the rundown and moved to third following a Danielle Burgos (Calexico, Calif./Arizona Western College) single to left field. Burgos then stole second before freshman Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) recorded an RBI single to left field, scoring Mueller to make it 1-0. Burgos was thrown out at home on the play and a flyout in the next at bat ended the inning.
The Mavericks added on three more runs in the top of the third to take a 4-0 lead. Crawford led off the inning with a single and stole second before Mueller singled to put runners at first and third. Burgos then reached on an error by the first baseman allowing Crawford to score to make it 2-0. After a groundout, Bowman singled to left field to score freshman Leilany Rodriguez (West Haverstraw, N.Y./North Rockland), who pinch ran for Mueller earlier in the inning, to give Mercy a 3-0 lead. Freshman Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) brought in the final run of the inning with a single to left field making it 4-0.
Junior Jessica Becchetti (Eastchester, N.Y./Ramapo College) pitched five scoreless innings and the Mavericks held a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth. Barton plated six runs on two hits in the sixth inning to take a 6-4 lead. The biggest blow was a three-run double from Massengill which gave the hosts the lead.
Bowman doubled in the top of the seventh but a line out to first ended the inning and game.
Bowman went 3-for-4 with an RBI and Johnston went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Franck went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Burgos went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Mueller went 2-for-4 and Crawford went 1-for-4. Becchetti pitched 5.0 innings with one run allowed and three hits allowed to earn a no-decision. Sophomore Catherine Zucker (North Babylon, N.Y./St. Joseph's College (L.I.) pitched 1.0 inning with five runs allowed to take the loss.
Barton was led by Massengill who went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Gilchrist pitched 4.0 scoreless innings to earn the win again in game two.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Mount Olive for a doubleheader at 1 & 3 p.m.
