DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 1, 2020) – Powered by a school-record nine goals and 14 points from junior Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 9/10 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 17-8 win over RV Lake Erie College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1) have won three of their first four games, while the Storm (0-4) remain winless on the year.
Scorcia added a game-high five assists and had two ground balls. Sophomore Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College) had three goals and three assists and junior Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC) had three goals. Senior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshman Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) both scored. Sophomore Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) dished out two assists and freshmen TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and James Bringman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington), sophomore Jake Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) and junior Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) also recorded an assist. Senior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 25-for-28 on faceoffs with a career-high 12 ground balls, setting a new school record for faceoffs won. Senior Kyle Gardner (Miller Place, N.Y./Rocky Point) had a team-high two caused turnovers and sophomore Thomas Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made four saves in the first half to earn the win. Sophomore Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) played the second half and made a career-high 12 saves.
Lake Erie was led by Matthew Cromie who had two goals and two assists. Johnny Wilson III made 16 saves to take the loss.
The Storm started the scoring at the 12:18 mark on a goal from Kyle Barna to take a 1-0 lead. Scorcia tied the game up at 1-1 just over a minute later with his first of the day. It remained 1-1 until the 6:52 mark when Scorcia scored again following an assist from Kearnan to make it 2-1. Lake Erie closed the quarter with two straight goals to take a 3-2 lead after one quarter.
Kearnan opened the scoring in the second quarter to tie the game up at 3-3. A Brendan Luthart goal gave the lead back to the Storm at 4-3 with 12:03 remaining in the half. Mercy closed the half with six straight goals to take a 9-4 lead at halftime. Shargel and Kearnan started the rally with three straight man-up goals before McPartland made it 7-4 at the 3:32 mark. Kearnan and Scorcia concluded the scoring in the half to give the Mavericks a five-goal lead at halftime.
Scorcia made it 10-4 at the 12:47 mark of the third quarter and later made it 11-4 on a man-up goal with 8:34 left in the quarter. Lake Erie ended an 8-0 run by the Mavericks with a Neil Gardner goal to make it 11-5. Scorcia followed with another goal to put the lead back to seven, 12-5, with 6:49 on the clock. The Storm closed the quarter out with two straight goals to head into the final quarter down, 12-7.
Barna scored to start the fourth quarter, cutting the Mercy lead to 12-8. However, the Mavericks answered with five straight goals to pull away from Lake Erie. Shargel made it 13-8 less than a minute after Lake Erie made it 12-8 and Scorcia tallied three more goals to make it 16-8 with 6:08 left. Guglielmo finished the scoring with his third goal of the season following an assist from Bringman to make it 17-8 with 3:13 remaining. Mercy cruised the rest of the way to the victory.
Mercy held a 48-34 edge in shots and a 41-35 edge in ground balls.
