DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 10, 2020) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime from sophomore Brady Kearnan (Courtice, Ontario/Newberry College), the No. 8 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 12-11 overtime victory over RV Bentley University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-1) have won three games in a row, while the Falcons (0-3) remain winless on the year.
Kearnan had two goals, one assist and four ground balls and junior Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and two assists and juniors Robert LoRicco (Guilford, Conn./University at Albany) and Marty Shargel (Agoura Hills, Calif./Onondaga CC) both scored twice. Freshman Robert Guglielmo (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had one goal and one assist and freshman TJ Heyder (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had a goal. Senior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) had a game-high 11 ground balls and went 18-for-25 on faceoffs. Senior Bobby Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two caused turnovers and five ground balls and freshman Justin Gerdvil (Northport, N.Y./Northport) had six ground balls. Sophomore Thomas Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made the start in goal and made nine saves in 42:58 minutes of action to earn the win. Sophomore Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) made three saves in 17:38 minutes of action.
Bentley was led by Walker Gautier and Ben Baldasaro who both had a team-high three goals. Michael Haggan made 11 saves to take the loss.
Mercy scored first at the 11:03 mark of the first quarter on a McPartland goal to take a 1-0 lead. Guglielmo made it 2-0 just under two minutes later before Bentley scored their first goal at the 5:02 mark to make it 2-1. Shargel netted his first of the game to bring the score to 3-1 and Scorcia tallied back-to-back goals to make it 5-1 after one quarter of play.
Scorcia recorded his third goal of the game with 9:38 remaining in the second quarter to give Mercy a 6-1 lead. Bentley followed with two straight goals to cut the Maverick lead to three, 6-3, with 2:16 left in the quarter. Kearnan closed the scoring in the half with a goal at the 1:40 mark to give the Mavericks a 7-3 lead at halftime.
The Falcons opened the third quarter with three straight goals to cut Mercy's lead to just one, 7-6, with 6:38 left in the quarter. The Mavericks stormed back with three straight goals to increase the lead back to four, 10-6, with 3:27 remaining in the third quarter. Heyder started the run with a man-up goal and LoRicco followed with his first of the game to make it 9-6. Shargel made it 10-6 with another man-up goal following an assist from Scorcia to give Mercy a four-goal lead. Bentley scored the final goal of the quarter to make it 10-7 heading into the fourth quarter.
Bentley started the fourth quarter with three straight goals again to tie the game up at 10-10 with 12:22 remaining in regulation. It remained 10-10 until the 4:27 mark when LoRicco netted his second of the day to make it 11-10. Bentley came back and tied the game up at 11-11 with 1:20 on the clock. Neither team could score in the final 1:20 of action, sending the game into overtime.
Rey won the opening faceoff in overtime with Gerdvil picking up the ground ball. After a Mercy timeout, Kearnan drove to in front of the net on the right side and finished to give the Mavericks the win just 36 seconds into the overtime period.
Bentley held a 41-38 edge in shots and Mercy held a 42-29 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 14th when they play at Molloy at 3 p.m.
