Sanchez Records 200th Career Point as No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Battles No. 1 Le Moyne

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 7, 2020) – Despite senior Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) recording her 200th career point, the No. 11 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a hard-fought, 14-9, decision to No. 1 Le Moyne College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (3-1) drop their first game of the year, while the Dolphins (2-0) remain unbeaten on the season.

Sanchez had a goal and an assist and is the fourth player with 200 points in program history, joining Hunter Isnardi, Grace Davidson and Emily Jehle. Senior Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) had a team-high four goals with four draw controls. Sophomore Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had two goals and two assists and junior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and freshman Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had one goal. The goal for Shimborske was the first of her career. Senior Senna Tadfie (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) had a team-high four caused turnovers and sophomore Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had a team-high six draw controls with two caused turnovers and four ground balls. Sophomore Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made the start and played 6:38 in goal before giving way to junior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) who made eight saves in the final 53:22 to take the loss.

Le Moyne was led by Jessica Meneilly who had a game-high six goals. Hannah George made eight saves to earn the win.

Sergio opened the scoring less than a minute in off an assist from Bishop to put Mercy up 1-0. Le Moyne followed with four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead with 23:46 left in the half, leading to a Mercy timeout. Out of the timeout, Sanchez scored following an assist from Bishop to make it 4-2 with 22:57 on the clock.

Brittney Pollack gave the guests a 5-2 lead following a free position goal just under a minute later. The Dolphins looked to be pulling away but the Mavericks continued to battle and rattled off four straight goals to take a 6-5 lead against the No. 1 team in the country with 13:01 on the clock. Sergio scored the first two goals of the run followed by Bishop and Shimborske to give Mercy the lead again.

The score remained 6-5 until the 4:44 mark when Sydney Meagher scored to tie the game up at 6-6. The score stayed tied at 6-6 heading into halftime.

Le Moyne started the second half with five straight goals to take an 11-6 lead with 22:25 remaining. Corace answered just under a minute later to make it 11-7, but Nicole Delany netted a goal a minute later to give the Dolphins a 12-7 advantage.

It remained 12-7 until the 14:44 mark when Sergio scored her fourth of the day to cut the Le Moyne lead to four, 12-8. Meneilly scored just over a minute later to make it 13-8 before Bishop tallied her second of the day to bring the score to 13-9 with 8:52 left. The Dolphins concluded the scoring with 2:55 left on another Meneilly goal and held on for the win.

Le Moyne held a 27-24 edge in shots and ground balls were tied at 15-15.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 11th when they play at Florida Tech at 7 p.m.
