Gonzalez Records Double-Double as Volleyball Plays at Southern Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Oct. 12, 2021) – Despite a double-double from junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College), the Mercy College volleyball team suffered a 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 18-25) setback to Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Pelz Gym.

The Mavericks (8-9) fall below .500 on the year and have lost two of their last three matches, while the Owls (16-6) have won two matches in a row.

Gonzalez had a team-high 15 assists and 17 digs. Junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) had a team-high seven kills and four aces with eight digs. Senior Sophia Flanders (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had 16 digs and senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) had six kills and 10 digs. Senior Tynesha Adams (Prattville, Ala./Bethune Cookman University) had five kills and senior Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had 11 digs.

Southern Connecticut State was led by Gabriela Vazquez and Erika Benson who both had a match-high 11 kills.

Mercy jumped out to an 11-9 lead in set one after an ace by Schneid. The Owls answered with a 6-0 run to take a 15-11 lead, forcing a Mercy timeout. Southern Connecticut would end the set on a 10-4 run to earn a 25-15 set one win.

The Owls took a 15-7 lead in set two and later held a 23-14 lead. Mercy continued to battle and scored five straight points to get within four, 23-19, leading to an Owl timeout. Southern Connecticut closed out the set with two of the next three points to take the set, 25-20.

Southern Connecticut built an 11-3 lead in set three. Mercy clawed their way back into the set with a 10-3 run, capped off by three straight Schneid aces, to make it 14-13 in favor of the Owls. Southern Connecticut ensued with a 7-1 run to increase the lead to 21-14 and held on for the 25-18 set three win.

Mercy had 22 kills, 70 digs, 19 assists, six aces, four blocks and hit .049. Southern Connecticut had 42 kills, 87 digs, 37 assists, five aces, three blocks and hit .227.

Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Bridgeport at 7 p.m.
