Flanders Records Double-Double as Volleyball Plays at Wilmington

NEWARK, Del. (Oct. 21, 2021) – Despite a double-double from senior Sophia Flanders (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) and a match-high-tying eight kills from junior Cristy Encarnacion (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands/Alcorn State University), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (17-25, 19-25, 17-25) decision to Wilmington University on Thursday night.

The Mavericks (9-12) have dropped four of their last five matches, while the Wildcats (13-10) have won three of their last four matches.

Flanders had 14 assists and a team-high 13 digs and Encarnacion had eight kills. Junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College) had a match-high 18 assists with seven digs and junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) had seven kills and 12 digs. Junior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had seven kills and senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) had six kills and six digs.

Wilmington was led by Heather Pedrick who had a match-high-tying eight kills with a match-high 22 digs.

The Mavericks held a 13-12 lead in set one after an Encarnacion block. The Wildcats closed the set on a 13-4 run to win the first set, 25-17.

Mercy jumped out to a 13-10 lead in set two before the hosts went on an 8-2 run to take an 18-15 lead, forcing a Maverick timeout. After the timeout, Mercy cut the deficit to two, 21-19, after a Schneid kill. However, Wilmington ended the set with four straight points to earn a 25-19 set two win.

The Mavericks built a 10-9 lead in set three after a Lankhorst kill. The Wildcats ensued with a 10-2 run to take a 19-12 lead, leading to a Mercy timeout. The Mavericks made it a four-point match, 21-17, after a Schneid kill, but Wilmington scored the set's final four points to win the set and match.

Mercy had 38 kills, 38 assists, 61 digs, four blocks, one ace and hit .076. Wilmington had 32 kills, 29 assists, 57 digs, nine blocks, nine aces and hit .210.

Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 23rd when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m.
