DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 9, 2021) – Despite a double-double from junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College), the Mercy College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (16-25, 11-25, 21-25) decision to ECC foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Victory Hall Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (7-8, 3-1 ECC) suffer their first ECC loss of the season, while the Wildcats (11-6, 4-0 ECC) remain undefeated in ECC play.
Gonzalez had 22 assists and a team-high 11 digs. Junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) had nine kills and seven digs and senior Tynesha Adams (Prattville, Ala./Bethune Cookman University) had six kills. Senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) added five kills.
Daemen was led by Sam Logan who had a match-high 11 kills.
Mercy took a 3-1 lead in the first set after an Adams kill. Daemen answered with seven straight points to take an 8-3 lead. The Mavericks later battled back and tied the set at 10-10. However, the Wildcats closed the set on a 15-6 run to take the first set, 25-16.
Daemen jumped out to a 6-1 lead in set two. Mercy later got within four, 8-4, but the Wildcats ended the set on a 17-7 run to earn a 25-11 set two win.
Mercy built a 10-8 lead in set three following a Schneid kill. The Mavericks later held a 14-13 lead before Daemen retook the lead at 15-14. An Adams kill tied the set at 15-15 before five straight points by Daemen gave them a 20-15 lead. Mercy continued to fight and got within two, 23-21, but back-to-back points by the Wildcats gave them the set and match.
Mercy had 26 kills, 39 digs, 24 assists, four blocks and hit .020. Daemen had 41 kills, 41 digs, 39 assists, eight blocks, six aces and hit .263.
Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host D'Youville at 1 p.m.
