ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Nov. 14, 2021) – Despite a game-high four saves from senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), the No. 2 seeded Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 double-overtime decision to No. 1 seeded Molloy College in the ECC Women's Soccer Championship Final on Sunday afternoon at Darcy Field.
The Mavericks (10-4-4) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and await a possible NCAA Tournament bid. The Lions (17-2) have won 10 games in a row and win their second straight ECC Championship.
Torres made four saves to take the loss. Graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) had a shot on goal and senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) had a team-high two shots.
Molloy was led by Dana Poetzsch who scored the game-winning goal. Jackie Carty made one save to earn the win.
Torres made a save in the 29th minute and Bermudez forced Carty to make a save in the 34th minute to keep the game scoreless. Torres made two more saves in the final 10 minutes of the half to send the team into halftime tied at 0-0.
The game remained scoreless after regulation with neither team recording a shot on goal in the second 45 minutes, sending the game into overtime.
Neither team recorded a shot in the first overtime, sending the game into a second overtime.
The second overtime saw Molloy go down a player after a second yellow card resulted in a red card. Torres made her fourth save in the 105th minute on a Lexi Verni shot. Molloy would find the back of the net just under a minute later when Poetzsch took the ball following a defensive misplay and fired the ball into an open net to give the Lions the 1-0 win in the 106th minute.
Molloy held a 7-6 edge in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks will now await a possible NCAA Tournament bid. The selection show will take place on Monday, November 15th at 6 p.m. at NCAA.com.
