Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 73-62 loss to Post in their home opener on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Jayden Dewaal who had a team-high 19 points and 12 rebounds in his Mercy debut. Junior James Taylor Jr. had 15 points and six rebounds and junior Elijah Mitchell had 12 points. The Mavericks are looking to start 1-1 for the first time since 2017-18 and are looking to start 2-1 or better for the first time since 2014-15 when they started 3-0. Mercy is looking to beat Dominican and Caldwell for the first time since 2003. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Dewaal currently ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game and is second in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Chargers
Dominican opened their 2021-22 season with wins over UDC and nationally-ranked STAC. The Chargers are currently ranked third in the latest D2SIDA East Region Poll and are receiving votes in the Top 25 Poll. Dominican was picked first in the North Division of the CACC Coaches' Poll after qualifying for the NCAA Tournament and going 4-4. The Chargers went 25-6 in their last full season in 2019-20. Dominican is led by Jalen Burgess who is averaging a team-high 25.0 points per game and 10.0 rebounds per game. He also averages 5.5 assists and 2.5 steals per game. Wahaad Johnson is second on the team with 18.5 points per game and Justin Copman and Joseph Merrill both average double-digits in scoring.
Scouting the Cougars
Caldwell opened their season with a loss to Southern N.H. before earning a 74-69 win over Stonehill last Saturday. The Cougars will face Bridgeport on Saturday before facing Mercy on Sunday. Caldwell was picked fourth in the CACC North Division Coaches' Poll after going 6-5 last year, qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. In their last full season, the Cougars went 12-15 in 2019-20. Caldwell is led by Anthony Cooper who is averaging a team-high 19.0 points per game and 2.5 assists per game. Mark Heber is averaging 12.0 points per game and Derrick Bueno and Tyler Washington are posting 9.0 points per game. Nichus Jackson averages a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game and Heber averages a team-high 3.5 steals per game.
