WILMINGTON, Del. (Nov. 20, 2021) – Powered by a game-high 25 points from junior Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team earned a 64-58 win over Goldey-Beacom College on Saturday night.
The Mavericks (2-2) have won two games in a row and start 2-2 for the first time since 2017-18. The Lightning (2-1) suffer their first loss of the season.
Wall went 9-for-13 from the floor and added four assists. Sophomore Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) had 10 points and eight rebounds and junior Asha Talib (Allentown, Pa./University of Bridgeport) had eight points and 10 rebounds. Senior Brianne Santos (Elmont, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) netted six points.
Goldey-Beacom was led by Briana Seltzer, Alexis Harrison and Azuri Abraham who all had 10 points.
The score was tied at 10-10 with 4:09 left in the opening quarter before a 7-1 run by the Mavericks gave Mercy a 17-11 lead after a Nudd three with 2:36 left in the quarter. A layup by Harrison made it 17-13 before Mercy scored three straight points to take a 20-13 lead. Goldey-Beacom scored the final two points of the quarter to cut Mercy's lead to 20-15 after one quarter of play.
The Lightning opened the second quarter with five straight points to tie the game at 20-20 with 7:47 left in the half. Mercy regrouped and went on a 9-3 run, capped off by a Wall layup, to take a 29-23 lead with 4:50 on the clock. The Mavericks increased the lead to seven, 34-27, with 1:37 remaining before the hosts scored the final four points of the half to cut Mercy's lead to 34-31 at halftime.
Goldey-Beacom opened the third quarter on an 8-4 run to take a 39-38 lead with 5:46 left in the third quarter. The Mavericks ensued with a 7-0 run, finished off by a Wall three, to give Mercy a 45-39 lead. The Mavericks headed into the fourth quarter with a 47-43 lead.
The Lightning started the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 49-47 lead with nine minutes left to play. Mercy came back on a 7-2 run, capped off by another Wall three, to take a 54-51 lead with 5:18 remaining. Goldey-Beacom stormed back with four straight points to take a 55-54 lead with 4:15 on the clock. The Mavericks clawed their way back with a 7-0 run, finished off by a Talib layup, to take a 61-55 lead with 1:17 left and held on for the win.
Mercy shot 43.4 percent (23-for-53) from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-for-15) from downtown and 68.4 percent (13-for-19) from the foul line. Goldey-Beacom shot 33.3 percent (26-for-78) from the field, 16.7 percent (4-for-24) from beyond the arc and 50.0 percent (2-for-4) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 44-41 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, November 23rd when they host Caldwell at 5 p.m.
