Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 72-51 loss to Caldwell on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by junior Garrett Kirkland and sophomore Alex May who both had a team-high 11 points. Mercy looks to start 1-3 for the second straight year. The Mavericks last road win came on January 15, 2020 when they earned a 70-57 win at Queens. Mercy is 5-1 all-time against Georgian Court and have won the last five meetings. Georgian Court earned their lone win in the series on November 20, 2013. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by sophomore Jayden Dewaal who is averaging a team-high 13.0 points and 11.0 rebounds per game in three starts. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday and is second in the ECC in rebounds per game. Junior Elijah Mitchell is second on the team with 12.3 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game. He also averages a team-high 2.3 steals per game. Junior James Taylor Jr. is third on the team with 11.0 points per game and May posts 7.0 points per game.
Scouting the Lions
Georgian Court is coming off a 73-50 loss to UDC on Monday. The Lions have opened their season with losses to Assumption, Saint Michael's and UDC. Georgian Court was picked fifth in the CACC South Division Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021 and 9-18 in 2019-20. The Lions are led by DJ Alicea who averages a team-high 14.5 points per game and 1.5 steals per game. Jelani Jackson is posting 11.0 points per game on 2.7 made threes per game. Clint Wright Jr. and Shane Williams average 9.3 and 9.0 points per game, respectively. Williams also leads the team with 7.0 rebounds per game. Georgian Court ranks last in the CACC in points per game (54.7) and shoots a league-worst 31.4 percent from the floor.
