Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 70-58 loss to Georgian Court on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Garrett Kirkland who had a career-high-tying 20 points on six threes. Junior Elijah Mitchell had 10 points and sophomore Jayden Dewaal had 10 points and nine rebounds. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. The Mavericks are looking to defeat the Setters for the first time since 1997. Mercy is currently led by sophomore Jayden Dewaal who is averaging a team-high 12.3 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in four starts. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday and is second in the ECC in rebounds per game. Junior Elijah Mitchell is second on the team with 11.8 points per game and 4.8 rebounds per game. He also averages a team-high 1.8 steals per game. Junior James Taylor Jr. is third on the team with 11.0 points per game and sophomore Alex May posts 5.7 points per game. Kirkland is fourth on the team with 9.8 points per game and is making a team-high 2.8 threes per game. Mercy is currently ranked No. 24 nationally in three point field goal percentage defense and Dewaal is currently ranked No. 4 nationally in offensive rebounds per game.
Scouting the Setters
Pace has opened the season with five straight wins and is coming off a 69-45 win over New Haven on Tuesday. The Setters were picked fifth in the NE10 Southwest Division Coaches' Poll after going 19-11 in 2019-20. Pace is currently ranked No. 8 in the latest D2SIDA East Region Poll. The Setters are led by Bryan Powell who is averaging a team-high 15.0 points per game on 65.5 percent shooting. Dominick Cristiano is posting 13.6 points and a team-high 7.4 rebounds per game and is shooting a team-best 65.5 percent from the floor. Brandon Jacobs is third on the team with 11.4 points per game and is averaging a team-high 5.2 assists per game. Marc Dadika also averages double figures in scoring with 10.0 points per game on 53.8 percent shooting. Pace leads the NE10 and is 10th nationally in rebound margin (+13.4).
