Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an 87-57 loss to Pace on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by junior Garrett Kirkland who had a team-high 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Junior Elijah Mitchell had 13 points and junior James Taylor Jr. had 11 points. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. The Mavericks are looking to improve to 2-2 all-time against Mansfield. Mercy is currently led by sophomore Jayden Dewaal who is averaging 10.2 points and a team-high 9.0 rebounds per game in four starts. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week and is third in the ECC in rebounds per game. Junior Elijah Mitchell leads the team with 12.0 points per game and is second with 4.2 rebounds per game. He also averages a team-high 2.0 steals per game. Junior James Taylor Jr. is third on the team with 11.0 points per game and sophomore Alex May posts 6.3 points per game. Kirkland is third on the team with 10.8 points per game and is making a team-high 2.8 threes per game.
Scouting the Mountaineers
Mansfield has opened their 2021-22 season with five straight losses and is coming off a 95-91 loss to Frostburg State on Monday. The Mountaineers went 6-21 during their last season in 2019-20 and are led by Justice Smith who averages a team-high 12.0 points per game with 5.6 rebounds per game. Eli Alvin is posting 11.6 points per game on 51.3 percent shooting and Jaz Farrell and Idris Ali both average 9.8 points per game. Scott Woodring averages a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game with 8.4 points per game and Smith dishes out a team-high 3.0 assists per game.
