BUFFALO, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 2021) – Powered by goals from sophomore Kayla Camacho (Valley Stream, N.Y./Valley Stream) and senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over ECC foe D'Youville College on Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field.
The Mavericks (9-3-4, 8-1 ECC) end the regular season on a three-game winning streak and secure a top two seed in next week's ECC Tournament. Mercy will host a Semifinal game against either Daemen or Roberts Wesleyan on Thursday, November 11th. If Molloy beats St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday, the Mavericks would host Daemen. If Molloy loses to St. Thomas Aquinas, Mercy would host Roberts Wesleyan and be the top seed in the tournament. The Mavericks also secure at least a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship. The Saints (5-8-2, 2-5-2 ECC) end their regular season with a loss.
Camacho netted her third goal of the year and McKail picked up her fourth goal of the year. Graduate student Nikki Bermudez (Oceanside, N.Y./New York Tech) dished out her second assist of the year and senior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made two saves to earn the win.
D'Youville was led by Jillian Bernas who scored and by Laurie Poeller who made two saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 42nd minute when the Mavericks drew a foul in the box and McKail connected on the ensuing penalty kick to put Mercy up 1-0.
Just over two minutes later Bermudez fed Camacho a thru ball and the sophomore found the back of the net to give Mercy a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The Mavericks held the Saints scoreless until the 88th minute when Bernas scored to make it 2-1. Torres made a late save to preserve the win for Mercy.
Mercy held an 8-6 edge in shots and 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 11th when they host either Daemen or Roberts Wesleyan.
