Dalmau Records Career-High Nine Points as Men's Soccer Earns 14-0 Win at D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Nov. 6, 2021) – Powered by a career-high four goals and one assist from sophomore Daniel Dalmau (Madrid, Spain/College of International Studies-Endicott), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a convincing 14-0 win over ECC foe D'Youville College on Saturday afternoon at Dobson Field.

The Mavericks (9-5-2, 5-2-2 ECC) end their regular season with a win and will await a possible NCAA Tournament berth after being eliminated from ECC Tournament contention earlier in the day. The 14 goals is a new school record and the 14-goal margin of victory is the largest in program history. The four goals scored by Dalmau are the most by a Maverick since Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus had four against St. Thomas Aquinas on October 31, 2018. The Saints (4-9-3, 0-8-1 ECC) see their regular season come to an end with two straight losses.

Dalmau recorded his first points of the season and graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo) added three goals. Senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) had two goals and an assist and senior Tormod Simonsen (Oslo, Norway/Seton Hill University) had a goal and two assists. Juniors David Breitenbach (Mannheim, Germany/Barton College) and Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim), sophomore Edward Quijano (Los Angeles, Calif./Marymount Manhattan College) and freshman Joey Dos Santos (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) also scored. Seniors Rainiero Salas (Panama City, Panama/Alderson Broaddus University), Javier Mangado (Logrono, Spain/Wheeling University) and Abraham Lopez (Houston, Texas/Harding University) recorded an assist. Graduate student Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate) played the first 59 minutes in goal to earn the win. Freshman Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made two saves in the final 31 minutes of action.

D'Youville was led by Rob McNeal who had a team-high two shots on goal. William Anderson made 12 saves to take the loss.

The Mavericks wasted little time in scoring as Kuhn made it 1-0 in just the 3rd minute of action. It remained 1-0 until the 25th minute when Echarri netted his first goal off an assist from Salas to make it 2-0. Echarri later made it 3-0 following a pass from Mangado in the 39th minute. The score remained 3-0 heading into halftime.

Mercy exploded for 11 goals in the second half to pull away from the Saints. Jones opened the frame with back-to-back goals to make it 5-0 in the 57th minute. Simonsen made it 6-0 in the 58th minute before Echarri connected on a penalty kick to make it 7-0 just 15 seconds later.

Dalmau broke through with his first goal of the day in the 61st minute off an assist from Lopez to make it 8-0. Dos Santos found the back of the net for the first time in his career in the 78th minute to give Mercy a 9-0 lead. Dalmau made it 10-0 with his second of the day before Quijano scored his first goal as a Maverick in the 80th minute to make it 11-0.

Dalmau continued his career day with back-to-back goals to increase the Mercy lead to 13-0 in the 82nd minute. Breitenbach scored the Mavericks final goal in the 88th minute to put the finishing touches on the win.

Mercy held a 41-2 edge in shots and a 13-2 edge in corner kicks.
