Wall Scores Team-High 10 Points as Women's Basketball Opens Season at Molloy

ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2021) – Despite a team-high 10 points from sophomore Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 64-41 decision to ECC foe Molloy College in their 2021 season opener on Saturday afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (0-1, 0-1 ECC) open up their season with a loss, while the Lions (1-1, 1-1 ECC) pick up their first win of the season.

Wall added one steal and one rebound and sophomore Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) had eight points and four rebounds. Freshman Asya Brandon (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) scored seven points in Mercy debut.

Molloy was led by Morgan Staab who had a game-high 19 points.

The Lions jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before the Mavericks came back on an 8-4 run, capped off by a Nudd three, which made it 8-8 with 5:24 left in the first half. Molloy closed out the quarter on a 15-4 run to take a 23-12 lead after one quarter of play.

Mercy opened the second quarter with back-to-back threes from Wall to make it 23-18 in favor of the Lions. Molloy answered back with a 10-0 run to increase the lead to 15, 33-18, with 5:46 left in the opening half. The Lions would head into halftime up, 33-21.

The Mavericks cut the deficit to 10, 35-25, following a Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) jumper at the 8:30 mark of the third quarter. Molloy came back on a 19-2 run to take a 54-27 lead and ended the quarter up, 54-29.

Mercy outscored the Lions 12-10 in the fourth quarter but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Mercy shot 27.1 percent (13-for-48) from the floor, 29.4 percent (5-for-17) from downtown and 50.0 percent (10-for-20) from the foul line. Molloy shot 49.1 percent (26-for-53) from the field, 15.4 percent (2-for-13) from beyond the arc and 62.5 percent (10-for-16) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 41-27 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Molloy at 12 p.m.
