DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2021) – Despite a season-high 16 points and five rebounds from sophomore Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 86-54 decision to ECC foe No. 13/17 Daemen College in their home opener on Saturday afternoon at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (0-4, 0-4 ECC) remain winless on the year, while the Wildcats (8-1, 6-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play.
Wall went 7-for-13 from the floor and had two assists and two steals. Freshman Jamie Waldron (Monroe, N.Y./Monroe Woodbury) added seven points in 14 minutes off the bench and freshman Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) had a career-high six points. Sophomore Jamiela Moore (Baldwin, N.Y./Labette CC) netted five points as all 11 Mavericks scored in the contest.
Daemen was led by Mickayla Ivy who had a game-high 17 points.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead and later held a 10-2 lead at the 4:18 mark of the first quarter. A Tedesco layup with three minutes left in the frame made it 14-8 before the visitors ended the quarter on a 10-3 run to head into the second quarter up, 24-11.
Daemen started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to increase the lead to 20, 31-11, with 7:53 left before halftime. Mercy cut the deficit to 16, 35-19, following a pair of free throws by Brianna Lee (Elmont, N.Y./Saint Mary's), but the Wildcats went on to end the period a 9-2 run to head into halftime up, 44-21.
The guests opened the third quarter on a 10-2 run to put the lead to 31, 54-23, with 7:05 on the clock. Daemen later increased their advantage to 34, 65-31, before Mercy ended the quarter with four straight points to head into the fourth quarter down, 65-35.
Daemen increased the lead to a game-high 35 points, 74-39, with 6:57 left to play and held on for the win.
Mercy shot 36.4 percent (20-for-55) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from downtown and 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from the foul line. Daemen shot 51.6 percent (33-for-64) from the field, 23.1 percent (6-for-26) from beyond the arc and 73.7 percent (14-for-19) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 45-29 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Daemen at 1 p.m.
