Game Preview: Men's Basketball Hosts D'Youville for Senior Day on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2021) – The Mercy College men's basketball team concludes their regular season and celebrates Senior Day when they host D'Youville College in an ECC matchup on Saturday, February 27th at 1 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • In their last game on Saturday, Mercy dropped an 82-51 decision to Daemen. Mercy was led by junior James Taylor Jr. who had a team-high 16 points.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 5th in the ECC Preseason Poll released in January.
  • The Mavericks are meeting D'Youville for the first time.
  • Saturday will be Senior Day for the Mavericks with the athletic department honoring seniors Dayvon Cuffey and Amadou Camara.
  • Mercy will be making their first appearance in the ECC Tournament since 2015-16 next week. All teams qualify for the tournament this year with D'Youville not eligible due to their transition to Division II.
  • Freshman Kerwin Prince was named to the ECC Honor Roll earlier this week after averaging 19.5 points and a team-high 10.0 rebounds per game. The freshman is a two-time ECC Rookie of the Week and is currently averaging 19.8 points and 10.5 rebounds per game on the year on 60.6 percent shooting. 
  • Also contributing is junior James Taylor Jr. who was named to the ECC Honor Roll last week after posting 17.7 points per game in three games. The junior is currently averaging 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game on the year. Sophomores Garrett Kirkland and Brandon Wilson also contribute with 8.2 and 7.8 points per game, respectively.
  • The Mavericks win over Molloy on February 14th  was their first over the Lions since 2018 and the 26-point margin of victory was Mercy's largest over Molloy since 2005.
  • Mercy is currently ranked No. 16 nationally in fewest fouls (102) and is No. 30 in fewest turnovers (111). The Mavericks are also currently ranked No. 32 in offensive rebounds per game (12.33) and No. 39 in blocks per game (3.5).
  • Prince is currently ranked No. 10 nationally in rebounds per game (10.5), No. 4 in offensive rebounds per game (4.67), No. 29 in field goal percentage (60.6) and No. 44 in points per game (19.8).
  • Taylor is ranked No. 20 nationally in Three-Point Field Goal Percentage (45.5).
Scouting the Saints
  • D'Youville earned their second win of the season last time out against Bryant & Stratton (Buffalo) with a 70-68 win. The Saints were led by Trent Scott who had a game-high-tying 18 points. 
  • The Saints were picked sixth in the ECC Preseason Poll. D'Youville is transitioning from Division III to Division II and is not eligible for the ECC Tournament.
  • D'Youville is 1-8 on the road this season and went 5-20 last year.
  • The Saints are led by redshirt senior Grant Beyer who is averaging a team-high 11.3 points per game and is making a team-high 1.9 threes per game. Freshman Trent Scott is averaging 10.1 points per game and freshman Mason Putnam is third on the team with 9.7 points per game.
  • Sophomore Noah Denz leads the Saints with 6.4 rebounds per game. Denz is a one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week.
Next Game
The Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 3rd in the ECC Tournament against an opponent to be determined.
