DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 17, 2021) – Powered by a career-high seven points from junior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip), the No. 14 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 20-6 victory over Caldwell University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (2-0) start 2-0 for the sixth straight season, while the Cougars (0-3) remain winless on the year.
Cummings had two goals and five assists with one ground ball and one caused turnover. Graduate student Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) had three goals and two assists and junior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had a game-high-tying four goals. Senior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had two goals and one assist and freshman Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had two goals. Sophomore Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) netted a goal and two assists and junior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and an assist. Freshman Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a goal and an assist and junior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had a goal, two assists, a game-high nine draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Sophomore Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield), junior Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and freshman Carly Diolosa (Brookhaven, N.Y./Bellport) also scored. Junior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had an assist, three ground balls and a game-high four caused turnovers and junior Hunter Savino (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) dished out an assist. Senior Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) had six draw controls, three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) made the start in goal and played the first 19:27 with two saves to earn the win. Junior Madeline Garvolosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) played the next 19:24 with one save and freshman Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) played the final 21:09 with two saves.
Caldwell was led by Arden Kassaleh who scored four goals and recorded her 300th career point.
Mercy fell behind 1-0 on a Kassaleh goal at the 28:11 mark. Bishop and Rosenfeld followed with back-to-back goals to put the Mavericks up 2-1 with 26:21 left in the opening half. Jules Wesler tied the game up at 2-2 just under two minutes later.
The Mavericks answered with eight straight goals to take a 10-2 lead with 16:18 left in the half. Rosenfeld got the rally started and Mackie and Corace added two goals apiece. Cummings, Reese and Bishop also scored as part of the run to give Mercy a commanding lead. Caldwell scored the final two goals of the half to head into halftime down, 10-4.
Mercy began the second half with three straight goals to build a 13-4 lead with 22 minutes left. Grzelaczyk, Bishop and Mackie all scored to open the half. Back-to-back goals from Kassaleh made it 13-6 with 20:47 left to play.
The Mavericks went on to score the game's final seven goals to pull away from the Cougars. Bishop, Cummings, Keenan, Shimborske, Corley and Schreck all scored to make it 19-6. Diolosa rounded out the scoring with her first career goal to finish off the victory for the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 31-13 edge in shots, an 18-9 edge in ground balls and 18-10 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 20th when they host No. 23 Roberts Wesleyan at 11 a.m.
