DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2021) – Powered by a game-high six ground balls and five caused turnovers from junior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), the No. 16 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 10-1 victory over Molloy College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1) bounce back from their first loss of the season, while the Lions (1-3) have dropped two games in a row. The one goal allowed is the fewest Mercy has allowed since they allowed one to Queens on March 26, 2019.
Junior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and senior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) led the Mavericks offensively with two goals apiece and junior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and freshman Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had a goal and an assist. Graduate student Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport), juniors Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) and sophomore Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) also scored. Junior Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg) added two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Senior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) played the first half in goal and made five saves to earn the win. Junior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made six saves in the second half without allowing a goal.
Molloy was led by Abbie Bellport who scored a goal and Mary-Kate Sweeney made eight saves to take the loss.
The Lions opened the scoring at the 29:34 mark of the first half to make it 1-0. However, they would not score again as the Mavericks defense held them scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Bishop answered just over a minute later with her first goal of the day to make it 1-1.
It remained 1-1 until there was 15:47 left in the half. Corace netted her first of the day off a pass from Grzelaczyk to give Mercy a 2-1 lead. Mackie made it 3-1 at the 5:28 mark of the opening half and the Mavericks headed into halftime with a 3-1 lead.
The Mavericks scored all seven goals in the second half to pull away from Molloy. Bishop got the run started with 27:26 left in the game and Rosenfeld, Keenan, Grzelaczyk, Shimborske, Corace and Reese all tallied goals to give Mercy a 10-1 lead with 1:41 left to play. Mercy controlled the action for the entire half leading to the impressive victory.
Mercy held a 24-20 edge in shots and a 20-15 edge in ground balls. Molloy held a 7-6 edge in draw controls.
The Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 2nd when they play at Jefferson at 3 p.m.
