Johnston Records Team-High Four RBI as Softball Sweeps D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2021) – Powered by a team-high four RBI on the day from sophomore Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial), the Mercy College softball team earned 10-2 and 12-2 victories over ECC foe D'Youville College on Friday afternoon at Dobson Field.

The Mavericks (10-6, 9-3 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak with the sweep, while the Saints (7-9, 2-8 ECC) has lost six straight games.

Game 1: Mercy 10, D'Youville 2

Mercy opened the scoring with a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High) singled and advanced to second following a groundout. Crawford then stole third before senior Danielle Burgos (Calexico, Calif./Arizona Western College) singled her home to make it 1-0.

It remained 1-0 until the top of the third when Mercy scored six runs to take a 7-0 lead. Crawford singled and stole second before senior Hannah Mueller (Fair Oaks, Calif./Bella Vista) walked. Burgos then singled to load the bases before Johnston recorded an RBI single to make it 2-0. Junior Ylannah Bowman (Temecula, Calif./Chaparral) reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second following an error that allowed two runs to score, making it 4-0. Freshman Alexandra Karavias (Westbury, N.Y./WT Clarke) then hit a two-run triple down the right field line, which made it 6-0. Senior Alyssa Guzman (Riverside, Calif./Mount San Antonio College) drove in the last run of the inning on a groundout to make it 7-0.

Mercy tacked on three more runs in the top of the fourth to take a 10-0 lead. Crawford led off the inning with a walk and Mueller singled. The duo then stole second and third before Johnston hit a two-run double to center field that gave the Mavericks a 9-0 lead. Karavias brought home the final run with a single to center field.

D'Youville plated two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-2, but it was not enough and the Mavericks won via the run-rule.

Johnston and Karavias both went 2-for-3 with three RBI and Burgos went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Crawford went 3-for-3 with three runs and Mueller went 1-for-2. Sophomore Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pitched three innings with no runs allowed to pick up the win.

D'Youville was led by Maddy Pepke who went 2-for-3 with a home run. Alexa Haberer pitched 2.2 innings with five earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 12, D'Youville 2

Mercy jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Crawford singled and stole second before Mueller walked. Burgos then singled to right field, allowing Crawford to score the game's first run. Johnston brought in the second run on a groundout to second to make it 2-0. Sophomore Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) singled home Burgos later in the inning to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.

D'Youville got a run in the bottom of the first and second to make it 3-2. Mercy made it 4-2 in the top of the third when Guzman singled home Bowman, who had singled earlier in the inning.

Mercy added on five more runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-2 lead. Burgos brought in the first run on an RBI single to center and Bowman plated the second when she drew a bases-loaded walk. Burgos later scored on an error by the catcher to make it 7-2 and Guzman then singled home Johnston to give Mercy an 8-2 lead. Junior Ariana Ricci (Sacramento, Calif./Cosumnes Oaks) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing home Bowman for the final run of the inning.

The Mavericks tacked on three more runs in the fifth to make it 12-2. Bowman hit a two-run double for the first two runs of the inning and she later scored following an error by the first baseman to make it 12-2.

Junior Sabrina Gonzalez (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Wellington) retired the Saints in the fifth without allowing a run to give the Mavericks another win via the run-rule.

Bowman went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs and Burgos went 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Guzman went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Franck went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Johnston went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Crawford went 2-for-4 with two runs. Mueller and freshman Mia Harris (West Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) went 1-for-3. Senior Jessica Becchetti (Eastchester, N.Y./Ramapo College) pitched one inning with two runs allowed to pick up the win. Gonzalez pitched four scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

D'Youville was led by Lauren Booth who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Booth also pitched 3.1 innings with six earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 20th when they host Staten Island at 2:30 p.m.
