Bishop Scores Game-High Four Goals as No. 19 Women's Lacrosse Defeats STAC, 17-3

SPARKILL, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2021) – Powered by a game-high four goals from junior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), the No. 19 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 17-3 win over St. Thomas Aquinas College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartans Field.

The Mavericks (10-1) have won eight games in a row and remain a perfect 5-0 on the road. The Spartans (4-3) see their two game winning streak come to an end.

Bishop added two ground balls and one draw control. Senior Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y/Mahopac) had three goals and one assist and sophomores Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) and Sydney Corley (Coram, N.Y./Newfield) and junior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each had two goals. Senior Kellie Znaniecki (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue), junior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and freshmen Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also scored. Junior Erin Chalich (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a game-high four assists and junior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had an assist, a game-high eight ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) played the first half in goal and made two saves to earn the win. Junior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made three saves in 24:09 minutes of action.

STAC was led by Leanna Iobbi who had a team-high two goals. Laura Delorenzo made 13 saves to take the loss.

The game was scoreless for over 10 minutes until Corley found the back of the net to make it 1-0 at the 19:10 mark. Corley netted her second of the day just under five minutes later to give Mercy a 2-0 lead. Keenan followed with a man-up goal to increase Mercy's lead to 3-0 with 11:21 left in the first half.

Iobbi scored for the hosts just over a minute later to make it 3-1. Lopreato and Corace responded with back-to-back goals to give the Mavericks a 5-1 advantage with 8:09 remaining in the half. A Danielle Cajou goal made it 5-2, but Mercy closed out the half with four straight goals to take a 9-2 lead at halftime. Znaniecki got the run started, Grzelaczyk scored twice and Corace netted another to give Mercy a seven-goal lead at halftime.

STAC scored their final goal of the game with 27:09 remaining. The Mavericks scored the final eight goals of the game to cruise to the victory. Bishop scored all four of her goals in the second half and Corace, Shimborske and Schreck all scored to give the Mavericks the convincing win.

Mercy held a 43-9 edge in shots, a 37-15 edge in ground balls and a 15-7 edge in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, May 1st when they host No. 16 Roberts Wesleyan at 11 a.m.
