Schneid Records Match-High 13 Kills as Volleyball Earns Straight-Set Win Over Nyack

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2021) – Powered by a match-high 13 kills from junior Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC), the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23) victory over Nyack College on Friday afternoon at Adelphi University.

The Mavericks (2-2) move to .500 on the year and defeat the Warriors (0-3) for the third straight time.

Schneid added eight digs and hit .417. Junior Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College) had 29 assists and 15 digs and senior Sophia Flanders (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) had 16 digs. Senior Tynesha Adams (Prattville, Ala./Bethune Cookman University) had nine kills and four blocks and senior Nilka Rivera Maldonado (Bayamon, P.R./Concordia College) had seven kills.

Nyack was led by Rayah Burge who had a team-high 11 kills.

The Warriors took an early 5-2 lead in set one, but the Mavericks rattled off five straight points to take a 7-5 lead. Mercy increased their lead to four, 12-8, before Nyack cut the deficit to one, 13-12. The Mavericks ensued with four straight points to build a 17-12 lead, following back-to-back aces by Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle). Nyack later tied the set at 20-20, but Mercy scored the next three points to take a 23-20 lead. The Warriors cut the Mercy lead to one, 24-23, but a Schneid kill gave the Mavericks a 25-23 set one win.

Mercy jumped out to a 10-4 lead in set two and held a 16-9 lead after a Schneid kill. Nyack responded by cutting the Mavericks lead to two, 20-18, but Mercy closed out the set on a 5-1 run, finished off by a Gonzalez ace to earn a 25-19 set two win.

Nyack opened the third set with a 9-6 lead, but the Mavericks rallied with four straight points to take a 10-9 lead. The Warriors tied the set at 11-11 before Mercy scored six points in a row to take a 17-11 lead. Nyack later cut the Mavericks lead to one, 24-23, but an Adams block gave Mercy the 25-23 set three win to secure the match.

Mercy had 36 kills, 54 digs, 36 assists, five blocks, seven aces and hit .303. Nyack had 37 kills, 39 digs, 28 assists, one block, 11 aces and hit .137.

Head Coach Gary Preston Jr. and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play Goldey-Beacom and Shepherd at Goldey-Beacom starting at 2 p.m.
