DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2021) – Powered by the game-winning in the 90th minute from senior Abraham Lopez (Houston, Texas/Harding University), off an assist from senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge), the Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over The College of Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (3-1) have won three games in a row and are now 13-0-2 in their last 15 home games. The Golden Knights (1-2) fall below .500 on the year with the loss.
Lopez scored his first goal as a Maverick and Jones dished out his first assist of the season. Freshman Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made one save to earn his first collegiate win.
Saint Rose was led by Hilmar Halldorsson who had a team-high three shots. Ryan Henning made two saves in goal to take the loss.
Elvestad recorded his lone save in the 16th minute of action and that would be the lone shot on goal for either team in the opening half. Junior Benjamin Van Buren (Anderson, S.C./USC Upstate) was called for his second yellow card in the 43rd minute so the Mavericks would have to play the remainder of the game with 10 players on the field.
Despite playing down a man, Mercy controlled the action in the second half, outshooting the Golden Knights 9-4. Henning made two saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless heading into the final minutes of play.
The game looked to be headed to overtime with the clock running under a minute to play in regulation. Jones fed Lopez a ball on the left side and Lopez took the ball from just outside the box, firing it into the lower right corner of the net to give Mercy the late 1-0 lead. The Mavericks would withstand a late Saint Rose push to earn the 1-0 win, despite playing down a man for the entire second half.
Mercy held a 13-7 edge in shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 18th when they host Staten Island at 3 p.m.
