SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (Sept. 2, 2021) – Despite five Mavericks recording a shot on goal, the RV Mercy College men's soccer team opened their 2021 season with a 1-0 setback to American International College on Thursday night at Abdow Field.
The Mavericks (0-1) suffer their first season-opening loss since 2017 and lose to the Yellow Jackets (0-1) for the first time since 2015. The game was Mercy's first in 649 days.
Graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo), senior Abraham Lopez (Houston, Texas/Harding University), juniors Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secudaria Miraflores) and Jens Ovreseth (Oslo, Norway/Davis & Elkins College) and freshman Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino) each had a shot on goal. Freshman Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made two saves to take the loss in his collegiate debut.
AIC was led by Gael Martin who scored the game-winning goal. Lucas Morales-Fernandez made five saves to earn the win.
The Mavericks recorded the game's first three shots on goal off the feet of Penafiel, Lopez and Echarri. Elvestad made his first collegiate save in the 38th minute to keep the game tied at 0-0. Baptista fired the final shot on goal of the half, but Morales-Fernandez made the save to send the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
Ovreseth picked up the Mavericks lone shot on goal in the second half in the 66th minute, but Morales-Fernandez made his fifth save to keep it 0-0. Elvestad answered just under three minutes later with his lone save of the half and the game remained scoreless.
It remained 0-0 until the 84th minute when Gael Martin scored on a shot in the lower left corner of the net, off an assist from Steinar Hakornarson, to make it 1-0 in favor of the hosts. The Yellow Jackets held the Mavericks scoreless in the final six minutes to secure the win.
AIC held a 14-12 edge in shots and 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 4th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
