DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 29, 2021) – Despite a goal from graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo), the Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-3-1, 1-1-1 ECC) suffer their first ECC loss of the season, while the Purple Knights (2-3-2, 2-1 ECC) move over .500 in ECC play.
Echarri netted his second goal of the season and senior Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) dished out an assist. Graduate student Felipe Baeza (Santiago, Chile/USC Upstate) made a season-high five saves to take the loss.
Bridgeport was led by Jesse Clark who scored both goals. Clement Anet made one save to earn the win.
After a scoreless first half, Mercy opened the scoring in the second half with Echarri's goal in the 50th minute to make it 1-0. Jones fed a pass to Echarri and the graduate student fired the ball into the right post and it bounced in to give Mercy the lead.
It remained 1-0 until the 73rd minute when Clark scored off an assist by Felipe Ospina to tie the game at 1-1. Bridgeport continued to apply pressure and Clark delivered a shot from outside the box into the upper right corner of the net in the 77th minute to give Bridgeport a 2-1 lead.
Mercy could not find the equalizer and the Purple Knights came away with the win.
Bridgeport held a 19-9 edge in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday when they play at STAC at 1 p.m.
