Torres Makes Seven Saves as Women's Soccer Earns 0-0 Tie Against AIC

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Sept. 5, 2021) – Powered by a season-high seven saves from graduate student Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 0-0 double-overtime draw with American International College on Sunday afternoon at Knights Field.

The Mavericks (1-0-1) remain unbeaten on the season, while the Yellow Jackets (1-0-1) also remain unbeaten in 2021.

Torres made seven saves to post her second straight shutout to begin the season. Sophomores Madison Rosa (Dublin, Calif./Dublin) and Marlene Avalos (San Diego, Calif./Otay Ranch) both had a shot on goal and senior Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) had two shots.

AIC was led by Josefine Stendahl and Caroline Porter who both had a game-high two shots on goal. Tamra Zippin made two saves to post a shutout.

Torres faced four shots on goal in the first 30 minutes of action and was up to the challenge, stopping all four to keep the game scoreless. The game was 0-0 heading into halftime with AIC recording all four shots on goal.

Avalos recorded the Mavericks first shot on goal in the 67th minute, but Zippin made the save to keep the game scoreless. Torres made two more saves in the final six minutes of regulation to maintain a 0-0 score, sending the game into overtime.

Torres made her final save of the day with eight seconds left in the first overtime period, sending the game into a second overtime.

Rosa forced Zippin to make a save in the 106th minute and McKail sent a shot wide with 34 seconds left in overtime. However, neither team could find the back of the net and the game ended in a tie.

AIC held a 12-6 edge in shots and Mercy held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, September 9th when they play at Adelphi at 7 p.m.
