Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an 82-72 win over Molloy on Monday. The Mavericks were led by junior James Taylor Jr. who had a team-high 19 points. Junior Brandon Wilson and sophomore Jay Turner had 17 points and sophomore Jayden Dewaal had 13 points and nine rebounds. Mercy won at Molloy for the first time since 2005 on Monday. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 12.9 points per game and has scored in double figures in eight of the 11 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is second on the team with 11.5 points per game and leads the team with 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is third on the team averaging 10.5 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 43.0 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in each of the last five games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 8.4 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 38.1 percent from downtown and has a team-high 24 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal averages 8.9 points and a team-high 7.9 rebounds per game in four starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is fourth in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Dolphins
Staten Island is coming off a 91-86 loss to Bridgeport on Saturday. The Dolphins were picked 10th in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 9-16 in 2019-20. Staten Island is playing an ECC schedule for the first time as they continue their transition from Division III to Division II. The Dolphins are led by sophomore Bryce Waterman who averages a team-high 13.9 points per game on 3.6 made threes per game. Three-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Messiah Mallory averages 12.4 points per game and senior Austin Mick averages 11.9 points per game on 47.4 percent shooting. Mallory averages a team-high 8.5 rebounds per game and 3.1 assists per game.
