Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Plays at Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (Jan. 26, 2022) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 94-74 decision to ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Wednesday night at Voller Athletic Center.

The Mavericks (2-15, 2-8 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Redhawks (7-6, 5-3 ECC) sweep the season series.

Junior James Taylor Jr. (South Chesterfield, Va./Neosho County CC) led Mercy with 18 points, going 10-of-10 from the foul line with six rebounds. Junior Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) recorded 16 points and sophomore Alex May (Englewood, N.J./St. Francis College (Brooklyn)) had a season-high 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal (Toronto, Canada/Trinidad State Junior College) added eight points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Rian Carter who had a game-high 20 points and nine rebounds.

The Redhawks jumped out to a 13-8 lead with 14:25 left in the first half. The Mavericks answered with a 20-6 run, finished off by a Dewaal layup, to take their largest lead of the game, 28-19, with 8:14 on the clock.

Roberts Wesleyan followed with a 17-0 run to take a 36-28 lead and ended the half on a 22-2 run to take a 41-30 lead at halftime.

A Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) three to open the second half got Mercy to within single digits, 41-33. The Redhawks then scored the next five points to take a 46-33 lead with 17 minutes left. Two Taylor Jr. free throws later made it a 12-point game, 49-37. However, the hosts went on a 15-6 run to build the lead to 21, 64-43, with 9:41 remaining.

Two more Taylor Jr. free throws made it 68-55 with seven minutes left. The Redhawks ensued with a 20-6 run to take their largest lead of the game, 88-61, with 3:20 to play. Mercy ended the game on a 13-6 run, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Mercy shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from downtown and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the foul line. Roberts Wesleyan shot 51.6 percent (32-of-62) from the field, 33.3 percent (10-of-30) from beyond the arc and 74.1 percent (20-of-27) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 38-34 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, January 30th when they host Bridgeport at 2 p.m.
