Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 94-74 loss at Roberts Wesleyan on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior James Taylor Jr. who had a team-high 18 points and junior Brandon Wilson netted 16 points. Sophomore Alex May added a season-high 11 points off the bench. Mercy is looking for their first win over Bridgeport since December 21, 2013. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 13.9 points per game and has scored in double figures in 12 of the 16 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is third on the team with 10.0 points per game and leads the team with 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Brandon Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is second on the team averaging 10.9 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 41.2 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in nine of his last 10 games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 7.6 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 37.1 percent from downtown and has a team-high 33 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week last week and averages 9.8 points and a team-high 9.2 rebounds per game and 1.6 blocks per game in seven starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is second in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Purple Knights
Bridgeport is coming off a 69-65 loss to Queens on Thursday for their fourth straight loss. The Purple Knights were picked third in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 24-4 in 2019-20. In 2019-20, Bridgeport won the ECC Regular Season Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Knights are led by one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week junior Malcolm Moye who is averaging a team-high 13.7 points per game with 5.8 rebounds per game. Sophomore Tim Dawson is second on the team with 13.1 points per game and leads the team with 4.3 assists per game and 2.3 steals per game. Junior Mason Williams is third on the team with 12.8 points per game and one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week senior Nemanja Zubac leads the team with 5.9 rebounds per game.
