Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 96-81 loss to Bridgeport on December 19th. The Mavericks were led by junior Brandon Wilson who had a career-high 23 points. Junior Elijah Mitchell had a career-high 21 points and junior James Taylor Jr. had 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Mercy is 7-25 in their last 32 meetings against the Knights and is looking to pick up their first home win over Queens since December 12, 2018. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 13.0 points per game and has scored in double figures in seven of the nine games he has played in. Mitchell is second on the team with 12.1 points per game and leads the team with 2.6 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is fourth on the team averaging 9.5 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 42.7 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in each of the last three games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 8.4 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 35.1 percent from downtown and has a team-high 20 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal averages 9.7 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game in four starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is fourth in the ECC in rebounds per game.

Scouting the Knights

Queens is coming off a 76-68 overtime win over Molloy on December 15th. The Knights were picked eighth in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 8-19 in 2019-20. Queens is led by William Ellis who is averaging a team-high 11.7 points per game. Shamar Chester is second on the team with 10.4 points per game and Jayden Seraphin posts 10.3 points per game. Eddie Mehmetaj and Dion Herrington also average double figures with 10.0 and 10.2 points per game, respectively. Mehmetaj leads the team and is second in the ECC with 8.7 rebounds per game. He also averages a team-high 2.6 assists per game. Herrington paces the Knights with 2.0 steals per game and one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Tyler Carey averages a team-high 2.7 blocks per game.
