Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Hosts Queens

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Jan. 5, 2022) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 78-51 decision to ECC foe Queens College on Wednesday afternoon at Victory Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (0-11, 0-4 ECC) remain winless on the year, while the Knights (4-4, 2-2 ECC) improve to .500 in the ECC play.

Junior Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) led Mercy with a game-high 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Junior Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) had 11 points on 4-of-9 shooting and sophomore Jay Turner (Waterbury, Conn./Notre Dame West Haven Prep) had 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Junior James Taylor Jr. (South Chesterfield, Va./Neosho County CC) added six points and junior Elijah Mitchell (Edison, N.J./Monroe College) netted five points.

Queens was led by Shamar Chester and Tyler Carey who both had a team-high 11 points.

The Knights opened the game with an 11-0 lead at the 12:14 mark of the first half. An Amadou Camara (Harlem, N.Y./Monroe College) layup got Mercy on the scoreboard at the 11:11 mark. A Chester three increased the Queens lead to 12, 14-2, with 10:24 left in the first half.

Mercy later cut deficit to five, 16-11, after a Wilson three-point play with 7:58 on the clock. Queens built the lead back to 10, 30-20, with 1:52 left in the half and headed into halftime with a 32-25 lead.

The Knights opened the second half on a 17-7 run to increase the lead to 17, 49-32, with 12:06 remaining. A Kirkland three at the 10:46 mark got Mercy back to within 10, 49-39. Queens ensued with a 27-10 run to take their largest lead of the game, 76-49, with 1:28 left and held on for the 78-51 win.

Mercy shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the floor, 23.1 percent (3-of-13) from downtown and 50.0 percent (12-of-24) from the foul line. Queens shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the field, 25.0 percent (3-of-12) from beyond the arc and 50.0 percent (11-of-22) from the charity stripe. Queens held a 58-28 edge on the glass and a 54-24 edge in points in the paint.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, January 8th when they play at Molloy at 2 p.m.
