Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 78-51 loss to Queens on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Brandon Wilson who had a game-high 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Junior Garrett Kirkland had 11 points and sophomore Jay Turner netted 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Mercy is 6-28 in their last 34 meetings against the Lions and is looking to win their second straight meeting against Molloy. The Mavericks are looking for their first win at Molloy since February 23, 2005. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 12.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in seven of the 10 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is second on the team with 11.5 points per game and leads the team with 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is third on the team averaging 9.9 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 43.5 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in each of the last four games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fourth on the team with 8.6 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 37.1 percent from downtown and has a team-high 23 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal averages 8.3 points and a team-high 7.7 rebounds per game in four starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is fourth in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Lions
Molloy is coming off a 69-64 win over Adelphi on December 30th. The Lions were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 3-8 last season. Molloy went 12-17 during their last full season in 2019-20, qualifying for the ECC Tournament. The Lions are led by junior William Muller who averages a team-high 14.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Freshman Darren Fergus is second on the team with 13.2 points per game and senior Steven Torre posts 7.8 points per game. Sophomore Kendell Ogilvie is a one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and averages 7.6 points per game. Fergus dishes out a team-high 3.6 assists per game and Muller blocks a team-high 0.9 shots per game.
