Schneid and Gonzalez Record Double-Doubles as Volleyball Earns Four-Set Win Over Queens

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 1, 2022) -Powered by double-doubles from seniors Larissa Schneid (Sao Paulo, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) and Yarianne Gonzalez (Manati, P.R./Monroe College), the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-19, 25-19) victory over ECC foe Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Victory Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (8-2, 2-1 ECC) have won four of their last five matches and earn their eighth straight win over the Knights (6-10, 1-2 ECC). Queens takes a set against Mercy for the first time since 2017.

Schneid had a match-high 18 kills with a match-high 12 digs. Gonzalez had a match-high 46 assists with 11 digs and five kills and senior Julia Pomerleau (Portland, Maine/University of Southern Maine) had a season-high 14 kills. Senior Stéphanie Lankhorst (Apeldoorn, Netherlands/Koninklijke Scholengemeenschap Apeldoorn) had nine kills, five aces and three blocks and senior Ayzaline Garay (San Juan, P.R./Bronx School of Law, Government and Justice) had seven kills and 10 digs. Senior Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) added 11 digs.

Queens was led by Christina Franco who had a team-high 10 kills.

The opening set saw Mercy take a 7-6 lead after a Schneid kill before Queens went on a 6-1 run to take a 12-8 lead. The Mavericks later cut the deficit to two, 13-11, after a Tanializ Rivera (Carolina, P.R./Concordia College) kill. However, the Knights answered with five straight points to take an 18-11 lead. Mercy later made it 21-17 after a Gonzalez kill, but the visitors ended the set on a 4-1 run to take the opening set, 25-18.

Mercy took a 10-7 lead in set two after back-to-back kills from Garay. The Knights tied the set at 16-16 before the Mavericks rallied with a 5-1 run, capped off by a Pomerleau kill, to give the Mavericks a 21-17 lead. Queens scored the next two points to make it 21-19, but the Mavericks responded by scoring three of the next four points to take a 24-20 lead after a Gonzalez kill. Following a Queens point, Pomerleau put down a kill to give Mercy a 25-21 set two win.

Queens jumped out to a 12-9 lead in set three. However, the Mavericks stormed back with seven straight points, capped off by a Vulic ace, to take a 16-12 lead. The Knights later trimmed Mercy's lead to one, 18-17, but the Mavericks scored the next four points to take a 22-17 lead. Pomerleau finished off the set with another kill to give Mercy a 25-19 set three win.

Set four was tied at 3-3 before Mercy scored four straight points, finished off by a Gonzalez kill, that gave the Mavericks a 7-3 lead. Queens later made it 9-6 before Mercy ratted off three straight points to take a 12-6 lead after a Cristy Encarnacion (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands/Alcorn State University) kill. The Knights cut the Mavericks lead to two, 13-11, before Mercy scored four consecutive points, capped off by three straight aces by Lankhorst, to put Mercy up, 17-11. Queens scored the next three points to make it 17-14, but the Mavericks ensued with a 6-2 run, ended by a Gonzalez kill, to give Mercy a 23-16 lead. Queens scored the next two points to make it 23-18 but kills from Schneid and Lankhorst gave Mercy the set and match.

Mercy hit .187 with 57 kills, 58 digs, 11 aces and three blocks. Queens hit .119 with 28 kills, 44 digs, seven aces and eight blocks.

Head Coach Ana Todorovic and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 5th when they play at Bentley at 7 p.m.
