DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 18, 2022) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 54th minute from sophomore Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino), off an assist from junior Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College), the No. 18 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over East Stroudsburg University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (10-2-3) improve to 7-0-1 at home and are 3-0-2 in their last five games. Mercy has now recorded double-digit wins in four of the last five seasons under Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and surpass their win total from last season. The Warriors (6-8-1) fall in their final non-conference game of the season.
Penafiel recorded his first goal of the season and Rodriguez added his fifth assist of the year. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made two saves to earn the win and his sixth shutout.
East Stroudsburg was led by Hunter Paone who had a team-high two shots with one shot on goal. Helgi Hermannsson made four saves to take the loss.
Mercy forced Hermannsson to make four saves in the first half and Elvestad made a stop in the 40th minute to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The Mavericks broke the scoreless tie in the 54th minute when Rodriguez fed a Penafiel a through ball and Penafiel fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
Elvestad made his final save of the game in the 75th minute to keep the Mavericks ahead 1-0. Mercy's defense would not surrender another shot and the Mavericks held on for the 1-0 win.
Mercy held a 12-5 edge in shots and a 5-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mavericks also held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 26th when they play at Bridgeport at 4 p.m.
