DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 29, 2022) – Powered by a goal from junior Daniel Rodriguez, the No. 14 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw with ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan University on Senior Day and in a Breast Cancer Awareness Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Kevin Aguilar, Diego Arosemena, Marco Passera, Benjamin Van Buren, David Sassano, Hamza Khan, David Breitenbach, Vasco Baptista, Pau Echarri and Javier Mangado were recognized for their contributions to the Mercy College men's soccer program.
The Mavericks (11-2-4, 4-1-3 ECC) remain unbeaten in their last seven games and will face Queens College in an ECC Championship Semifinal on Thursday, November 3rd. If Queens loses to Staten Island tonight, Mercy will be the No. 2 seed and host Queens. If Queens wins or ties, Queens would be the No. 2 seed and host Mercy. The Redhawks (7-4-5, 3-1-4 ECC) have secured the No. 4 seed in the ECC Championship and will play at top seed Molloy on Thursday.
Rodriguez netted his fourth goal of the season and senior Vasco Baptista dished out his team-leading seventh assist of the season. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad made four saves.
Roberts Wesleyan was led by Justin Robertson who scored. Jared Gibbons made eight saves.
The Redhawks wasted little in scoring as Robertson found the back of the net just 1:20 into the game to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Elvestad made a save in the 32nd minute and Gibbons made two saves to keep the game at 1-0. Rodriguez would even the score at 1-1 in the 41st minute when Baptista fed him a through ball inside the box and Rodriguez beat Gibbons 1 v 1 to even the score at 1-1. Gibbons made his final save of the half in the 42nd minute to keep the game tied at halftime.
Elvestad made two key saves on back-to-back shots from Tamas Nagy in the 56th minute to keep the game tied at 1-1. Gibbons made five more saves in the second half for the Redhawks to keep the game tied at 1-1 for the remainder of the contest.
Mercy held a 22-15 edge in shots and a 9-5 edge in shots on goal. Roberts Wesleyan held an 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 3rd when they play Queens in an ECC Semifinal at a time and place to be determined.
