DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2022) – Powered by a game-high two goals from sophomore Luís Silva (Esposende, Portugal/Knox College), the No. 24 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 win over regionally-ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (9-2-1) win their second game in a row and improve to 6-0 in at home this season. Mercy also matches their win total from all of last season. The Penmen (5-3-2) see their four-game unbeaten streak come to an end. The three goals scored by Mercy are the most surrendered by Southern New Hampshire this season. The Penmen entered today's game allowing just four goals total in their first nine games. Southern New Hampshire was ranked fourth in the East Region entering today's game.
Silva now has a team-high six goals and 12 points and senior Marco Passera (Haugesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) recorded his second goal of the season. Junior Daniel Rodriguez (Caracas, Venezuela/Erskine College) recorded his fourth assist of the season, freshman Mathias Schilbred-Eriksen (Bergen, Norway/Tertnes Videregaende Skole) dished out his team-leading sixth assist of the year and sophomore Martin Penafiel (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Verbo Divino) produced his second assist of the season. Sophomore Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) made five saves to earn the shutout win.
Southern New Hampshire was led by Philipp Hermann who had a team-high six shots. Preston Neal made three saves to take the loss.
Both Elvestad and Neal made a pair of early saves to keep the game scoreless. Mercy finally found the back of the net in the 37th minute when Rodriguez fed Silva a through ball and Silva fired the ball into the upper right corner of the net to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
Mercy tacked on a late goal in the 45th minute as Silva headed in a Schilbred-Eriksen corner kick to put the Mavericks up, 2-0, at halftime.
Elvestad made two more saves in the second half and Penafiel stopped a shot from going into the net to keep the score at 2-0. Passera later made it 3-0 in the 84th minute when he headed in a Penafiel short corner kick.
Mercy would not surrender another shot on goal and came away with the 3-0 win over the regionally-ranked Penmen.
Southern New Hampshire held a 16-14 edge in shots and a 7-6 edge in shots on goal. Mercy held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 8th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m.
