Crawford and Puglia Record an RBI as Softball Faces Bloomsburg

FLORENCE, S.C. (Feb. 20, 2022) – Despite an RBI from senior Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High) and junior Hailey Puglia (Holtsville, N.Y./Assumption College), the Mercy College softball team dropped an 11-2 decision to Bloomsburg University on Sunday morning at FMU Softball Stadium.

The Mavericks (1-3) fail to build off their game two win yesterday, while the Huskies (2-1) move over .500 on the year.

Crawford went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Puglia went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Sophomore Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) went 2-for-3 and junior Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra) went 1-for-3. Senior Sabrina Gonzalez (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Wellington) pitched one inning with four earned runs allowed to take the loss.

Bloomsburg was led by Nicolette Ray who went 2-for-2 with three RBI and three runs. Savannah Doney pitched a complete game to earn the win.

The Huskies plated five runs in the top of the first on five hits and two Mercy errors to take a 5-0 lead. Emma Little had the biggest blow of the inning, hitting a three home run.

Bloomsburg added on two more runs in the top of the second to build a 7-0 lead. Danielle Barnes had a two-run double in the inning. Mercy inched closer with a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-1. Junior Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) walked to lead off the inning and later scored on a Puglia single up the middle.

The Huskies made it 10-1 in the top of the third, scoring three runs, highlighted by a Ray two-run double.

The score remained 10-1 until the bottom of the fourth when Mercy scored a run to make it 10-2. Freshman Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) walked and later scored on a Crawford RBI single down the leftfield line.

Bloomsburg scored their final run of the game in the top of the fifth to make it 11-2. Mercy went down in order in the bottom of the fifth and the Huskies earned the win via the run-rule.

Mercy had five hits and five errors and Bloomsburg had 13 hits and no errors.

Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 4th when they play Mount Olive at 12 p.m. and West Liberty at 2 p.m. at Mount Olive.
