AMHERST, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2022) – Despite a team-high 10 points from junior Elijah Mitchell (Edison, N.J./Monroe College), the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped an 84-47 decision to ECC foe No. 24 Daemen College on Sunday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (5-18, 5-11 ECC) have their three-game winning streak snapped, while the Wildcats (18-7, 15-1 ECC) sweep the season series.
Mitchell added four rebounds and junior Garrett Kirkland (Springdale, Md./Bishop McNamara) had nine points. Senior Amadou Camara (Harlem, N.Y./Monroe College) netted six points and sophomore Jayden Dewaal (Toronto, Ontario/Trinidad State Junior College) recorded five points.
Daemen was led by Sean Fasoyiro who had a game-high 18 points.
Daemen jumped out to a 14-6 lead with 11:27 left in the first half. Kirkland followed with a three to get Mercy within five, 14-9. The Wildcats closed the half on a 29-7 run to take a 43-16 lead at halftime.
The hosts scored the first five points of the second half to take a 48-16 lead with 18:26 remaining. A three from Alex May (Englewood, N.J./St. Francis College (Brooklyn)) and a dunk from Mitchell made it 48-21. Daemen answered with a 25-7 run to take their largest lead of the game, 73-28, with seven minutes left. The Wildcats led by double figures the rest of the way to secure the win.
Mercy shot 26.6 percent (17-of-64) from the floor, 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from downtown and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the foul line. Daemen shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the field, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from beyond the arc and 89.5 percent (17-of-19) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 41-40 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 23rd when they host Staten Island for Senior Night at 7 p.m.
