Wall Scores Team-High 22 Points as Women's Basketball Plays at Daemen

AMHERST, N.Y. (Feb. 20, 2022) – Despite a team-high 22 points from junior Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped an 81-49 decision to ECC foe Daemen College on Sunday afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.

The Mavericks (10-14, 8-8 ECC) have dropped eight games in a row, while the Wildcats (16-4, 14-1 ECC) sweep the season series.

Wall went 9-of-14 from the floor and 3-of-6 from downtown. Junior Kellie Nudd (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy) added eight points and a team-high five rebounds. Senior Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and sophomore Maria Tedesco (Ocean Township, N.J./St. Rose) each netted six points.

Daemen was led by Katie Titus who had a game-high 31 points.

The Wildcats jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the 6:45 mark of the first quarter. A Wall jumper made it 7-4 before Daemen scored four straight points to take an 11-4 lead. Two Nudd free throws made it 11-6 with 4:20 on the clock. The Wildcats followed with a 6-0 run to take a 17-6 lead. Another Wall jumper with 1:11 left in the quarter capped a 5-0 run that got Mercy within six, 17-11. A Mickayla Ivy free throw gave Daemen an 18-11 lead after the first quarter.

A Nudd three-point play at the 5:56 mark of the second quarter cut Daemen's lead to eight, 22-14. The Wildcats responded with an 11-4 run to take their largest lead of the half, 33-18, with 1:05 left in the half. Mercy ended the half on a 6-0 run to head into halftime down nine, 33-24.

The hosts started the third quarter on a 14-2 run to increase their lead to 21, 47-26, with five minutes left in the quarter. Mercy continued to battle and cut the deficit to 15, 50-35, after a Wall three with 3:30 on the clock. Daemen closed the quarter on an 11-4 run to head into the fourth quarter up, 61-39.

The Wildcats began the fourth quarter on a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game, 73-41, with 4:43 remaining. Mercy trimmed the deficit to 28 on two separate occasions but could not get closer and Daemen came away with the win.

Mercy shot 34.5 percent (19-of-55) from the floor, 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from downtown and 66.7 percent (8-of-12) from the foul line. Daemen shot 46.0 percent (29-of-63) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from beyond the arc and 76.2 percent (16-of-21) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 46-25 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 23rd when they host Staten Island at 5 p.m.
