Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an 84-47 loss to No. 24 Daemen on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by junior Elijah Mitchell who had a team-high 10 points. Junior Garrett Kirkland added nine points and senior Amadou Camara netted six points. The Mavericks will Elijah Mitchell, Amadou Camara and Korey Lee for Senior Night prior to the game Wednesday. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. The Mavericks currently sit two games out of the sixth and final ECC Tournament spot. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 13.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in 13 of the 18 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is fourth on the team with 10.1 points per game and leads the team with 2.4 assists and 1.7 steals per game. Junior Brandon Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is second on the team averaging 11.2 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in 10 of his last 11 games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is third on the team with 10.3 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times and MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention twice. He is shooting a team-best 40.7 percent from downtown and has a team-high 57 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on January 18th and averages 10.1 points and a team-high 9.4 rebounds per game and 1.6 blocks per game in nine starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is third in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Dolphins
Staten Island is coming off an 82-73 loss to UDC on Saturday for their fourth straight loss. The Dolphins were picked 10th in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 9-16 in 2019-20. Staten Island is playing an ECC schedule for the first time as they continue their transition from Division III to Division II. The Dolphins are led by eight-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Messiah Mallory who averages a team-high 14.7 points per game and is second in the ECC with 9.6 rebounds per game. Sophomore Bryce Waterman who averages 14.0 points per game on 3.7 made threes per game. Senior Austin Mick averages 11.2 points per game and averages 2.3 made threes per game. Junior Chris Velasquez dishes out a team-high 3.0 assists per game.
