Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off an 83-48 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Garrett Kirkland who had a team-high 16 points and by sophomore Jayden Dewaal who had 14 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Mercy is looking for their first win over Queens since January 15, 2020. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 13.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in 13 of the 18 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is fourth on the team with 9.4 points per game and leads the team with 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Brandon Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is second on the team averaging 11.2 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in 10 of his last 11 games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 7.8 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 38.8 percent from downtown and has a team-high 38 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on January 18th and averages 10.6 points and a team-high 9.3 rebounds per game and 1.7 blocks per game in nine starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is third in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Knights
Queens is coming off a 63-59 win over UDC on Saturday for their second win in a row. The Knights currently sit in third place in the ECC standings. The Knights were picked eighth in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 8-19 in 2019-20. Queens is led by Dion Herrington who is averaging a team-high 11.6 points per game and 1.5 steals per game. William Ellis is second on the team with 11.5 points per game and one-time ECC Rookie of the Week Jayden Seraphin is third on the team with 9.7 points per game on 52 percent shooting. Two-time ECC Rookie of the Week Shamar Chester posts 9.4 points per game and Eddie Mehmetaj puts up 9.2 points per game on 54.5 percent shooting (No. 3 in ECC). Mehmetaj also averages a team-high 8.6 rebounds per game (No. 4 in ECC) and 2.9 assists per game. One-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Tyler Carey averages a team-high 2.4 blocks per game (No. 1 in ECC) and nets 9.0 points per game.
