MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Mar. 18, 2022) – Despite an RBI from junior Samantha Franck (La Habra Heights, Calif./La Habra), the Mercy College softball team dropped 8-1 and 6-0 decisions to RV Barry University on Friday afternoon at Buccaneer Softball Field.
The Mavericks (2-12) have dropped five games in a row, while the Bucs (20-11) have won three of their last four games.
Game 1: Barry 8, Mercy 1
Barry jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning after a grand slam by Payton Germer. The Bucs added three more runs in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 7-0.
Mercy scored a run in the top of the third to make it 7-1. Senior Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High) singled and advanced to second on an error. Crawford advanced to third on a groundout before Franck singled up the middle, scoring Crawford for the Mavericks first run.
Barry answered with a run in the bottom of the third to make it 8-1. Neither team would score in the final four innings and the Bucs came away with the game one win.
Franck went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Crawford and junior Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) went 1-for-3. Junior Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) pitched 4.1 innings with seven earned runs allowed to take the loss. Junior Angelina Oquendo (Middle Island, N.Y./Longwood) pitched 1.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Barry was led by Germer who went 1-for-2 with five RBI. Cassandra Lee pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had three hits and one error and Barry had eight hits and two errors.
Game 2: Barry 6, Mercy 0
The score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the third when Barry scored five runs to take a 5-0 lead.
Crawford recorded the Mavericks lone hit in the top of the fourth and stole second but was left stranded at second to end the inning. The Bucs added a run in the fourth inning to increase their lead to 6-0.
Mercy went down in order in the final three innings, giving Barry the game two win.
Crawford went 1-for-3 and senior Sabrina Gonzalez (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Wellington) pitched a complete game with six runs allowed to take the loss.
Barry was led by Berlin Colvin who had a team-high two RBI. Maci Barnhart pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Mercy had one hit and no errors and Barry had nine hits and no errors.
Head Coach Mike Fazio and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Lynn for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
