BUFFALO, N.Y. (Apr. 24, 2022) – Despite a team-high two RBI from senior Alexis Crawford (Hemet, Calif./West Valley High), the Mercy College softball team dropped 8-0 and 6-5 decisions to ECC foe D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon at Dobson Field.
The Mavericks (10-33, 8-12 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Saints (22-12, 11-9 ECC) win the season series with Mercy for the first time.
Game 1: D'Youville 8, Mercy 0 (5 Innings)
Crawford led off the game with a double but was unable to score. The Saints scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead.
D'Youville added three runs in the second and one in the third to take an 8-0 lead. Mercy went down in order in the fourth and fifth innings to give the Saints the game one win via the run-rule.
Crawford and sophomore Shannon Sisco (Cicero, N.Y./Mansfield University) went 1-for-2 and senior Ariana Ricci (Sacramento, Calif./Cosumnes Oaks) went 1-for-1. Junior Alexi Benson (Fredericksburg, Va./Riverbend) allowed four earned runs in four innings to take the loss.
D'Youville was led by Mikayla Bush who went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Cassie Crerar pitched five shutout innings to earn the win.
Mercy had three hits and one error and D'Youville had 10 hits and one error.
Game 2: D'Youville 6, Mercy 5 (10 Innings)
Mercy scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Sydney Johnston (Virginia Beach, Va./First Colonial) singled and later scored on a Ricci RBI single to make it 1-0. Crawford delivered a two-run single later in the inning to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead. The Saints got a run back in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-1.
The Mavericks made it 4-1 with a run in the fourth. Freshman Maddie Lula (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) singled and later scored after Sisco reached on a fielder's choice.
The Saints scored two runs in the sixth and a run in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4, sending the game into extra innings.
After a scoreless eighth inning, Mercy took a 5-4 lead when Johnston led off the inning with a single and later scored on a sophomore Alexandra Karavias (Westbury, N.Y./WT Clarke) RBI triple. The Saints tied the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the inning on a Bush RBI triple.
Mercy went down in order in the top of the tenth. D'Youville won the game in the bottom of the tenth when Laura Beck singled up the middle to score Jamie Bower, giving the Saints the 6-5 walk-off win.
Crawford went 2-for-6 with two RBI and Johnston went 3-for-5 with two runs. Junior Nicole Smart (Santa Clarita, Calif./Golden Valley) went 2-for-5 with a run and Karavias went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Lula went 2-for-4 and Ricci went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Sabrina Gonzalez (Royal Palm Beach, Fla./Wellington) allowed four earned runs in 9.1 innings to take the loss.
D'Youville was led by Beck who went 2-for-5 with two RBI. Sarah Parzych pitched all 10 innings to earn the win.
Mercy had 12 hits and five errors and D'Youville had 12 hits and one error.
Interim Head Coach Jaime Lorenzo and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 27th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 3 p.m.
