Game Preview: RV Women's Soccer Hosts Southern Connecticut State in Home Opener on Wednesday

Scouting the Mavericks

The Mavericks opened their 2022 season with a 1-0 loss to Franklin Pierce on Sunday. Mercy was led by graduate student Nikki Bermudez who had a game-high two shots on goal and by freshman Kamy Anaya who had one save. Mercy is 5-2 in their last seven meetings against the Owls and have won five meetings in a row. The Mavericks look to win their first home opener since 2019. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 12-5-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the ninth straight season. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship and made the ECC Championship Final for the first time since 2017. The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and begin the 2022 season receiving votes. Leading the returners for 2021 ECC Coach of the Year Danny Leon Jr. is Sydney Cooper who was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-ECC after playing a team-high 1,902 minutes in 2021. Mercy also returns their top scorer from last year in Claudia McKail who had a team-high six goals and 14 points. First Team All-ECC and All-Region selection Bermudez also returns after recording 13 points on five goals and three assists. Kayla Camacho also returns after posting four goals and two assists and Dominique Bono comes back after scoring four goals. Madison Rosa returns after leading the team in assists in 2021 with six and Marlene Avalos returns after having seven points on two goals and three assists. Tyra Anderson, Jessica Hoyt and First Team All-ECC selection Skyler Schwenkler also return for the Mavericks.

Scouting the Owls

The Owls are coming off a 2-0 win over Staten Island on Sunday after dropping a 2-0 decision to Bridgeport in their season opener on Friday. Southern Connecticut State was picked eighth in the NE10 Preseason Poll after going 7-8-4 last season, advancing to the NE10 Championship Game. Kelsey Burr and Amanda Dustin both recorded goals in the win over Staten Island and Lindsay Burnham, Caileigh Driscoll, and Taylor Hennig each have assists on the season. Dustin was a Second Team All-NE10 selection last year. In goal, the Owls are led by Abby Allen who is 1-1 on the season with 15 saves, a .882 save percentage and 1.00 goals-against average. Southern Connecticut State also returns Kaitlyn D'Amico who was a Third Team All-NE10 selection in 2021 and Kylee Slavik who was named to the NE10 All-Rookie Team last season.
