Game Preview: Women's Soccer Hosts Holy Family on Tuesday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 2-0 win over Daemen in their ECC opener on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by freshman Ancksu Dixon and sophomore Isabella Messina who both scored and by junior Kayla Camacho who had two assists. The Mavericks are looking to start 5-1 for the first time since 2019. Mercy has won four games in a row after opening their season with a loss. The Mavericks are 4-1 against Holy Family in their last five meetings dating back to 2014. Graduate student Nikki Bermudez was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, freshman Ancksu Dixon was tabbed Rookie of the Week and Cooper was named to the Honor Roll last week. Bermudez, Dixon, and Camacho all have a team-high three goals on the year and Dixon ranks third in the ECC with nine points on the year on three goals and three assists. Graduate student Claudia McKail has a goal and an assist and Valadez, graduate student Jessica Hoyt, junior Skyler Schwenkler and Messina also have a goal on the season. Graduate student Sydney Cooper has a team-high-tying three assists, which is second in the ECC. Junior Madison Rosa and Camacho both have two assists on the year. Freshman Kamy Anaya is 4-1 in goal this season with 12 saves, a .800 save percentage and 0.63 goals-against average. The Mavericks are coming off a season in which they went 12-5-4 and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history. The Mavericks look to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season and make the ECC Championship for the ninth straight season. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship and made the ECC Championship Final for the first time since 2017. The Mavericks ended the season receiving votes nationally in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and began the 2022 season receiving votes. Leading the returners for 2021 ECC Coach of the Year Danny Leon Jr. is Cooper who was named ECC Defensive Player of the Year, D2CCA and United Soccer Coaches All-Region and First Team All-ECC after playing a team-high 1,902 minutes in 2021. Mercy also returns their top scorer from last year McKail who had a team-high six goals and 14 points. First Team All-ECC and All-Region selection Bermudez also returns after recording 13 points on five goals and three assists. Camacho also returns after posting four goals and two assists and Dominique Bono comes back after scoring four goals. Rosa returns after leading the team in assists in 2021 with six and Marlene Avalos returns after having seven points on two goals and three assists. Tyra Anderson, Hoyt and First Team All-ECC selection Schwenkler also return for the Mavericks.

Scouting the Tigers

Holy Family dropped a 1-0 decision to Post on Saturday in their last game. The Tigers were picked second in the CACC Preseason Poll after winning the CACC Regular Season Championship last year. Holy Family went 12-5-2 last season and fell to Jefferson in the CACC Championship Semifinals. The Tigers return 22 student-athletes from last year's team and have been led by Brynn Hess who has Holy Family's lone goal of the season. Jacqueline Ziegler has a team-high nine shots and Brianna Pudlo is 0-3-1 in goal with 17 saves, a .773 save percentage and 1.25 goals-against average in four starts.
